Guro Tribe Masks

The Guro tribe is known for their intricate and symbolic elephant masks, which hold great cultural significance within their community. These masks are crafted with meticulous detail and are often used in ceremonial rituals and performances. The elephant, revered for its strength and wisdom, represents important values within Guro culture, such as power and protection. The masks are typically carved from wood and adorned with vibrant colors and decorative elements. They are not only beautiful works of art but also serve as important symbols of identity and tradition for the Guro people.

About the Tribe

The Guro or Gouro people (also known as the Kweni) are Mandé-speaking people residing in the valley regions of the Bandama River in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Mande invasions in the second half of the 18th century drove the Guro from the north and northwest. Invading French colonists brutally colonized them between 1906 and 1912. The Guro were originally known as the Kweni, and their neighbors, the Baule, gave them the name "Guro or Gouro." The Guro are some of Africa's most prolific artists.
