Guro Tribe Mask

Guro masks are known for their elaborate and stylized designs. They often feature intricate carvings, bright colors, and detailed ornamentation. These masks are typically carved from wood and then painted using natural pigments. Guro masks are primarily used in various rituals and ceremonies, including funerals, harvest celebrations, and initiation rites. They play a significant role in connecting the physical world with the spiritual realm. Each mask has symbolic meanings and is often associated with specific deities, spirits, or ancestral figures. The designs and colors used in the masks are rich with cultural symbolism and meanings.

About the Tribe

The Guro or Gouro people (also known as the Kweni) are Mandé-speaking people residing in the valley regions of the Bandama River in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Mande invasions in the second half of the 18th century drove the Guro from the north and northwest. Invading French colonists brutally colonized them between 1906 and 1912. The Guro were originally known as the Kweni, and their neighbors, the Baule, gave them the name "Guro or Gouro." The Guro are some of Africa's most prolific artists.
