Baule Tribe Antique Wooden Pots

The Baule people located primarily in Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) produce various forms of art, including wooden sculptures, masks, and pots. Antique wooden pots from the Baule tribe are highly valued for their craftsmanship and cultural significance. These pots often feature intricate carvings and designs depicting scenes from everyday life, mythological figures, or abstract patterns. The pots are typically carved from local hardwoods, which are durable and can withstand the test of time. The wood is often treated to enhance its longevity and appearance. They were used for a variety of purposes, including storage of food, water, or sacred items. Some pots were also used in rituals and ceremonies, making them significant in the cultural and religious practices of the Baule people.

About the Tribe

Baule or Baoule people are found in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) between the Comoé and Bandama rivers. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples and one of the largest groups in Côte d'Ivoire who historically migrated from Ghana. They played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people, and maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries.
