Ashanti Tribe Mask – This mask belongs to the Ashanti or Asante tribe in Ghana. They are often worn as part of a ceremonial costume and are used to represent the spirits of ancestors during religious and social gatherings. The masks are believed to bridge the spiritual and physical realms, bringing the spirits of ancestors and other entities to life when worn. The masks come to life through dance and the mood of the event. The wearer of the mask would wear an elaborate outfit to conceal their identity and add to the mystique of the mask.
About the Tribe
Asante, also spelled Ashanti, people of south-central Ghana and adjacent areas of Togo and Côte d’Ivoire. Ashanti people are the largest ethnic group in Ghana. They had established a settlement in the area and were later joined by others in the 16th century. Most of the Asante live in a region centred on the city of Kumasi, which was the capital of the former independent Asante state. They speak a Twi language of the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family and are a subgroup of the Akan peoples.
